Things I’m Just Too Girly To Understand

My friends tease me a lot for often being a walking contradiction. I’ve been told time after time again that everyone, upon meeting me, thinks that I’m an extremely girly goody-two-shoes. This is probably because I wear dresses ninety percent of the time and always tend to look like I’ve been transported from 1948 or something. And then, once people get to know me, they’re always shocked at how non-girly I can be at times. I shoot, sit unfazed  while watching horror films, and make fun of anything even remotely close to a romantic comedy. And yet, despite often brushing off overly feminine tendencies, I find that there are still a number of things that I am way too girly to understand. Guys, I’m talking to you. I have no idea why you…

  • Think that it’s fun to sit in a deer stand all day

It’s not. It’s boring. My best friend and I went up there with her brother once and he tried to explain to us what it was like. Apparently we’re supposed to sit up there for hours without talking, moving, or squealing and just wait for some poor innocent animal to calmly walk past us. Then we’re supposed to blow its brains out and drag it home? I just don’t get that. Not that I mind other people doing it, but I think I might actually prefer going to the dentist to hunting deer. Maybe.

  • Talk about cars like they’re people

Just about every guy I know does this and it constantly confuses me. “Look at that beauty. See her pretty black racing stripe? Man, that’s the car for me!” Or “My truck’s never let me down. She gets me through dirt, mud, and snow. I call her ‘Old Faithful’. Isn’t she a beauty?” No, your truck is not beautiful. It’s two tons of dull red metal with tires five times the size of my head. I don’t see the beauty in that.

  • Watch five John Wayne movies in a row and insist they’re all special

I love me a good John Wayne film. But five in a row? Let me clue you in: They all have the same exact plot. Grisly good guy with unbelievable aim. Fiery woman who at first resists him and then swoons all over him and falls at his feet. Posse of bad guys who couldn’t shoot a sleeping elephant on a sunny day. The good guy avoids getting shot, kills off the bad guys, and convinces the woman she’s dying to kiss him. There. Now you don’t have to waste another ten hours watching the Western marathons on AMC! You’re welcome.

  • Think that “The Avengers” was actually interesting

It wasn’t. It was a bunch of violent, strangely-dressed guys (and one girl) randomly fighting and blowing up things while talking about their confusing pasts that I know absolutely nothing about. Maybe if I had any clue who Captain America or Hawkeye was, I might actually appreciate that movie, but who has the time to read fifty million vintage comic books and find out?

Sorry if I come across kind of rant-ish this morning. Obviously I’ve been spending too much time with my guy friends and need to go shopping or something. 😉 Plus, I always like to rant on Saturdays for some reason. It makes me happy!

I am UNfollowing you for this post! 😉 Trucks are beautiful and have personality. And sitting in a deer stand – that’s dinner you’re talking about! If you’ve never spent an evening hauling a gun all over the foothills, looking for critters that you know are laughing at you, you haven’t lived.

K, so maybe I won’t unfollow you, but may I beg you to desist from posting anymore hunting/dentist comparisons or suggestions that a truck or muscle car is a lifeless hunk of metal?

I will grant the John Wayne and Avengers thing (never actually seen either ’cause I think action films are dumb).

This comment is getting long, but I wanted to mentioned that I saw Elf, just so I could understand when you reference it 😀

Oh, dear! Please don’t! 😉 Haha, I have never spent an evening doing that! Maybe I should–that way I can say I have “lived”! And I never said cars were lifeless… Remember that we’re the people who fondly refer to our minivan as “Sacagewea” because “she takes us places”… Yeah, we’re weird. 😉
Good for you! I will try to use an “Elf” reference soon, just for your sake! 😉

Haha, I totally hear you on the deer stand thing. Our old church had a lot of “country” folks in it, and they loved hunting. 😉

Oh, oh, and when guys and girls start talking about specific cars they want and such and you are sitting there in total silence because you have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and if you do have any idea you frankly don’t care all that much because you aren’t planning on buying a car anytime soon anyway and you sit there wondering why it is so fascinating a subject for them. Rather awkward. 😉

I know virtually nothing about John Wayne films and only know a little bit about the Avengers, so… you’re in good company. 😉

P.s. That picture absolutely cracked me up, and my brother looked at it and just stared at it. Yes, rather sad, but what can you expect? He’s a guy (and he didn’t even get it…). I just showed it to him again and he read it for a minute before saying, “Ohhh! …I think I get it.” Oh, brother. 😉

Our whole county is crawling with “country folk”, haha! 😉 Yes, that is so true for me! Although I am planning to buy a car soon, so mostly I just ask questions and try to soak up some of their wisdom. 😉

I agree with you totally…until the last one. I’m a HUGE fan of The Avengers, but each to their own. 😉 The John Wayne one I cracked up about because, yes, my dad loves them and got us to watch one and we all fell asleep. No seriously.

  4. I AGREE WITH YOU ON EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID! Really….I probably wouldn’t last 10 minutes sitting still waiting for a deer…cars are cars…they don’t matter much to me….John Wayne movies are interesting…but I get bored easily with them 😛 And the Avengers…I don’t understand why anyone would want to watch it.. 😛 I mean…come on!! so there you go…you’re not alone! 😉

Well, this post taught me something – guess that I’m not very girly after all! Love, love love John Wayne! And I totally want a Maserati. (the granTurismo… in blue.)
